5 Types of Djinn
The jinn or djinn, also known as genie in the west, are otherworldly creatures in Islamic Mythology that originated in pre-Islamic Arabian mythology. The jinn are one of three sentient creatures of God, the other two being humans and angels according to the Quran and other Islamic texts. While humans are made of clay and angels of light, the jinn are made of a smokeless fire. Yet, they are also physical beings with the ability to manipulate solid objects, and vice-versa, to be manipulated. The Jinn, unlike angels, are believed to have free will and can do either good or evil deeds. It is also said they will face God on judgement day. Before Islamic traditions the jinn were worshiped in a way very similar to the gods. One ancient inscription reads, "Jinnaye, the good and rewarding gods.."
In mythology the jinn are usually invisible to humans, although humans appear quite clearly to them as they can also possess a human body. Some people in Islamic cultures have been known to blame everyday occurrences on direct interference in their lives by jinn. Like bad luck at a traffic stop or even their wife's bad attitude. Jinn have the power to travel large distances very rapidly, and can be found living in sparsely populated areas like mountains, trees, seas, or the skies. Like humans, the jinn are socially organized with courts, kings, and marriages. They divide themselves into three classes: those that have wings and can fly, those that resemble snakes or dogs, and those that travel without rest. In addition to these classes the jinn can take on any number of forms including vultures, snakes, dragons, and onagers. They can even assume the resemblance of any human they might choose. It is generally believed that each human has an assigned jinn that whispers influencing messages into their ears and minds. Whether the message is good or bad depends entirely on the particular jinn.

#5 Genus loci
The Genus loci are protective spirits of the house and home. They prefer to stay close to the abode or their favored human but can travel if necessary. They are highly intelligent creatures and often sensitive and even funny. One funny example of a a self claimed Genus loci is the house spirit, Gef The Talking Mongoose. Gef lived with the Irving family on The Isle of Man in the 1930's. Here are some of Gef's quotes:
"I was brought to England from Egypt by a man named Holland," Gef said. "When I was in India, I lived with a tall man who wore a green turban on his head. Then I lived with a deformed man, a hunchback."
"I am an earthbound spirit."
"I am not a spirit. I am a little extra, extra clever mongoose."
"If I were a spirit, I could not kill rabbits."
"I am not evil. I could be if I wanted. You don't know what damage or harm I could do if I were roused. I could kill you all, but I won't."
"I have three spirits, and their names are Foe, Faith and Truth."
"You'll put me in a bottle if you catch me.""If you knew what I know, you'd know a hell of a lot!"
"I am a ghost in the form of a weasel, and I shall haunt you with weird noises and clanking chains."
"I am a freak. I have hands and I have feet, and if you saw me you'd faint, you'd be petrified, mummified, turned into stone or a pillar of salt."
(After being asked where he would go when he died)"To Hell, to the Land of Mist."

#4 Daeva
Daeva means "a being of shining light," and the Daevas are a most disagreeable type of Jinn. They are evil creatures that encourage chaos and disorder. The Daeva are the personification of every imaginable evil, and are know to frequent places of suffering and hopelessness. The Daeva are the younger spirits constantly in battle with the Asuras, nature-jinn who promote harmony. The Daevas were once worshiped as gods, proven by and inscription credited to Xerxes in the 5th century b.c., it reads: "The daivas thou shalt not worship!" They have a range of individual powers from incredibly strong and dangerous, to relatively benign, and their destructiveness is evident in the symptoms they cause: disease, pain, grief, or cosmic events such as falling stars, or even natural disasters like droughts or earthquakes.
Defenses against the Daeva include:
A fire (cf. Adur) is an effective weapon against the dews, and keeping a hearth fire burning is a means to protect the home. The dews are "particularly attracted by the organic productions of human beings, from excretion, reproduction, sex, and death." Prayer and other recitations of the liturgy, in particular the recitation of Yasht (so Sad-dar), is effective in keeping the demons at bay. Demons are attracted by chatter at mealtimes and when silence is broken a demon takes the place of the angel at one's side. According to Shayest-ne-Shayest 9.8, eating at all after nightfall is not advisable since the night is the time of demons. In the 9th century Rivayats (65.14), the demons are described as issuing out at night to wreak mayhem, but forced back into the underworld by the divine glory (khvarenah) at sunrise.
#3 Qarin
The Qarin's name means "constant companion," and that is what they do. According to Islamic literature, each of us has a Qarin and they grow and learn as we do. One quote from Muhammad reads:“There is none of you who does not have a companion (qareen) appointed for him from among the jinn.” They said, “Even you?” He said, “Even me, but Allaah helped me against him fa aslama [or fa aslamu], so he only tells me to do that which is good.” The Qarin are individuals but are confined to our experiences, which can define a Qarin's character.
#2 Houri
The Houri are the divine and beautiful beings that are given to humans when the enter Jannah, or paradise. They are said to be God's idea of beauty, because they never age or die, they are forever loyal, and they have no bodily excretions. The Houri rarely become pregnant, they are transparent to the bone, and hairless everywhere but their eyebrows and head. They are know for their beautiful eyes.
Thus shall it be. And We shall pairA them with companions pure, most beautiful of eye.

—Quran, sura 56 (Al-Waqiah), ayat 34-36[32]And among His wonders is this: He creates for you mates out of your own kindC so that you might incline towards them, and He engenders love and tenderness between you: in this, behold, there are messages indeed for people who think! ... And He it is who creates [all life] in the first instance, and then brings it forth anew: and most easy is this for Him, since His is the essence of all that is most sublime in the heavens and on earth, and He alone is almighty, truly wise.
—Quran, sura 30 (Ar-Rum), ayat 21...27[33]There are also verses regarding both genders explicitly:
Allah has promised the believers, both men and women,D gardens through which running waters flow, therein to abide, and goodly dwellings in gardens of perpetual bliss: but Allah's goodly acceptance is the greatest [bliss of all] -for this, this is the triumph supreme!
—Quran, sura 9 (At-Taubah), ayah 72[34]As for anyone - be it man or womanE - who does righteous deeds, and is a believer withal - him shall We most certainly cause to live a good life, and most certainly shall We grant unto such as these their reward in accordance with the best that they ever did.
—Quran, sura 16 (An-Nahl), ayah 97[35]A verse regarding other companionship:
And, O our Sustainer, bring them into the gardens of perpetual bliss which Thou hast promised them, together with the righteous from among their forebears, and their spouses, and their offspring - for, verily, Thou alone art almighty, truly wise
—Quran, sura 40 (Ghafir), ayah 8[36] Al-Hasan Al-Basri says that an old woman came to the messenger of Allah and made a request, O’ Messenger of Allah make Dua that Allah grants me entrance into Jannah. The messenger of Allah replied, O’ Mother, an old woman cannot enter Jannah. That woman started crying and began to leave. The messenger of Allah said, Say to the woman that one will not enter in a state of old age, but Allah will make all the women of Jannah young virgins. Allah Ta’aala says, Lo! We have created them a (new) creation and made them virgins, lovers, equal in age.—Al-Tirmidhi, Jami` at-Tirmidhi (Surah Waaqi’ah,Muhammad was heard say: "The smallest reward for the people of Heaven is an abode where there are eighty thousand servants and seventy two wives, over which stands a dome decorated with pearls, aquamarine and ruby, as wide as the distance from [Damascus] to San'a.
—Al-Tirmidhi, The Features of Heaven as described by the Messenger of AllahA houri is a most beautiful young woman with a transparent body. The marrow of her bones is visible like the interior lines of pearls and rubies. She looks like red wine in a white glass. She is of white color, and free from the routine physical disabilities of an ordinary woman such as menstruation, menopause, urinal and offal discharge, child bearing and the related pollution. A houri is a girl of tender age, having large breasts which are round (pointed), and not inclined to dangle. Houris dwell in palaces of splendid surroundings.
—Al-Tirmidhi, Jami` at-Tirmidhi[43]
#1 Ifrit
The Ifrit are in a class of infernal jinn, those noted for their strength and cunning, and appear as giant winged creatures of smokeless fire. They can be either male or female, and live underground or frequent ruins or abandoned places. They usually marry their own kind but have been know to marry humans. Humans can also kill or capture an Ifrit, if they are particularly clever. One tale of such human was the Sorcerer Solomon, who tricked the Ifrit for many decades. An Ifrit can change forms to various animals, people, or inanimate objects, or can even become a sandstorm.
"An ifrit (strong one) from the jinn said: "I will bring it to you before you rise from your place. And verily, I am indeed strong, and trustworthy for such work." One with whom was knowledge of the Scripture said: "I will bring it to you within the twinkling of an eye!" Then when Solomon saw it placed before him, he said: "This is by the Grace of my Lord - to test me whether I am grateful or ungrateful! And whoever is grateful, truly, his gratitude is for (the good of) his ownself; and whoever is ungrateful, (he is ungrateful only for the loss of his ownself). Certainly my Lord is Rich (Free of all needs), Bountiful." - Qur'an, Sura An-Naml (27:39-40)
