There is a struggle between Russia and the USA-NATO for 'control' of Ukraine.
Ukraine is the second biggest country in Europe.
It is a land of corruption and competing oligarchs.
Russia's Black Sea fleet is based at Sevastopol in the Ukraine.
Some parts of the Ukraine want to maintain links with Russia.
But, one part of the Ukraine was once part of the Austrian Empire and one part of the Ukraine was once ruled by Poland.
When Ukraine was ruled by Russia, millions of Ukrainians died in a famine engineered by Stalin.

However, Nazi collaborators opposing Stalin carried out "some of the worst atrocities committed by any side in World War II."
Currently, the 'opposition' has been protesting against Ukrainian President Yanukovich's refusal to sign a trade agreement with the European Union.
Russia is currently offering Ukraine cheap gas and trade deals.
The protesters "armed with clubs, helmets, and improvised bombs unleashed brutal violence on the police, storming government buildings, beating anyone suspected of pro-government sympathies, and generally wreaking havoc on the streets of Kiev."

The violent part of the 'opposition' calls itself 'Right Sector' and "they share a common reverence for the so called 'Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists', led by Stepan Bandera, the infamous Nazi collaborators who actively fought against the Soviet Union and engaged in some of the worst atrocities committed by any side in World War II."
