Peter Power, Managing Director of Crisis Management at Visor Consultants, says that the terrorists concentrate on obvious targets.

He says: "Volgograd is a transport hub for this part of Russia...

"So transport, communication, economy – all these issues are pretty obvious targets to hit and produce an immediate impact on the Russian public, and not only Russian but also for those who are travelling there next year."

Gordon Hahn of the Center of International Strategy says that a possible perpetrator of the Volgograd attack is "a former Russian soldier by the name of Pavel Kosolapov and he is from Volgograd.

"He was involved in a train bombing back in 2007 and suspected of several other bombings."

In 2010, the vice-speaker of the State Duma, Mr Zhirinovsky, said that the British and American intelligence services were involved in bombings in the Moscow metro.

"The explosions in the metro - is the continuation of the plan against Russia, which is being developed in London and by special services, and by our former compatriots.

"These are also some forces in the United States that are unhappy that there would improvement in relations between our countries", said V. Zhirinovsky.

In October 2013 there was another Volgograd bus bombing

This earlier bus bombing involved 'suicide bomber' Naida Asiyalova

"Why did Naida Asiyalova have her passport on her if she was going to carry out a terrorist attack? And more importantly, if the passport was found at the blast site, then why was it undamaged? And what’s up with a picture of her in a hajib!"
