The causes:
1. the wide gap between the rich and the poor and
2. the strain on the planet's resources.
According to the report, rich 'elites' may be responsible for both problems.
According to the report: 'The mass of the population, while producing the wealth, is only allocated a small portion of it by elites, usually at or just above subsistence levels.'
The report refers to the downfall of various civilizations, including the Roman, Han, Gupta and various Mesopotamian empires
