By 2019, the world's largest healthcare system will be in Indonesia.

Indonesia's innovative healthcare scheme

In recent decades, many Indonesian children have died because their parents could not afford the necessary medicines to cure them of diseases such as typhoid.

Now, in 2014, poor people can register with a new national health insurance programme.

The poor will have to pay at least US$2 per month to be in the scheme.

The current 'neoliberal' government of General Yudhoyono is not keen on the scheme, which has been forced on it by a 2004 law that said that all Indonesians must be covered by insurance.

Professor Hasbullah Thabrany, of the University of Indonesia, notes that the government is giving very little information about the new scheme to the public.

The professor thinks that the US $1.7bn that has been allocated to the health ministry for 2014, will only meet 40 percent of the market costs of care.
