5 Types of Djinn

The jinn or djinn, also known as genie in the west, are otherworldly creatures in Islamic Mythology that originated in pre-Islamic Arabian mythology. The jinn are one of three sentient creatures of God, the other two being humans and angels according to the Quran and other Islamic texts. While humans are made of clay and angels of light, the jinn are made of a smokeless fire. Yet, they are also physical beings with the ability to manipulate solid objects, and vice-versa, to be manipulated. The Jinn, unlike angels, are believed to have free will and can do either good or evil deeds. It is also said they will face God on judgement day. Before Islamic traditions the jinn were worshiped in a way very similar to the gods. One ancient inscription reads, "Jinnaye, the good and rewarding gods.."

In mythology the jinn are usually invisible to humans, although humans appear quite clearly to them as they can also possess a human body. Some people in Islamic cultures have been known to blame everyday occurrences on direct interference in their lives by jinn. Like bad luck at a traffic stop or even their wife's bad attitude. Jinn have the power to travel large distances very rapidly, and can be found living in sparsely populated areas like mountains, trees, seas, or the skies. Like humans, the jinn are socially organized with courts, kings, and marriages. They divide themselves into three classes: those that have wings and can fly, those that resemble snakes or dogs, and those that travel without rest. In addition to these classes the jinn can take on any number of forms including vultures, snakes, dragons, and onagers. They can even assume the resemblance of any human they might choose. It is generally believed that each human has an assigned jinn that whispers influencing messages into their ears and minds. Whether the message is good or bad depends entirely on the particular jinn.

Here is a list of 5 types of Jinn:

#5 Genus loci

The Genus loci are protective spirits of the house and home. They prefer to stay close to the abode or their favored human but can travel if necessary. They are highly intelligent creatures and often sensitive and even funny. One funny example of a a self claimed Genus loci is the house spirit, Gef The Talking Mongoose. Gef lived with the Irving family on The Isle of Man in the 1930's. Here are some of Gef's quotes:

"I was brought to England from Egypt by a man named Holland," Gef said. "When I was in India, I lived with a tall man who wore a green turban on his head. Then I lived with a deformed man, a hunchback."
"I am an earthbound spirit."
"I am not a spirit. I am a little extra, extra clever mongoose."
"If I were a spirit, I could not kill rabbits."
"I am not evil. I could be if I wanted. You don't know what damage or harm I could do if I were roused. I could kill you all, but I won't."
"I have three spirits, and their names are Foe, Faith and Truth."
"You'll put me in a bottle if you catch me.""If you knew what I know, you'd know a hell of a lot!"
"I am a ghost in the form of a weasel, and I shall haunt you with weird noises and clanking chains."
"I am a freak. I have hands and I have feet, and if you saw me you'd faint, you'd be petrified, mummified, turned into stone or a pillar of salt."
(After being asked where he would go when he died)"To Hell, to the Land of Mist."

#4 Daeva

Daeva means "a being of shining light," and the Daevas are a most disagreeable type of Jinn. They are evil creatures that encourage chaos and disorder. The Daeva are the personification of every imaginable evil, and are know to frequent places of suffering and hopelessness. The Daeva are the younger spirits constantly in battle with the Asuras, nature-jinn who promote harmony. The Daevas were once worshiped as gods, proven by and inscription credited to Xerxes in the 5th century b.c., it reads: "The daivas thou shalt not worship!" They have a range of individual powers from incredibly strong and dangerous, to relatively benign, and their destructiveness is evident in the symptoms they cause: disease, pain, grief, or cosmic events such as falling stars, or even natural disasters like droughts or earthquakes.

Defenses against the Daeva include:
A fire (cf. Adur) is an effective weapon against the dews, and keeping a hearth fire burning is a means to protect the home. The dews are "particularly attracted by the organic productions of human beings, from excretion, reproduction, sex, and death." Prayer and other recitations of the liturgy, in particular the recitation of Yasht  (so Sad-dar), is effective in keeping the demons at bay. Demons are attracted by chatter at mealtimes and when silence is broken a demon takes the place of the angel at one's side. According to Shayest-ne-Shayest 9.8, eating at all after nightfall is not advisable since the night is the time of demons. In the 9th century Rivayats (65.14), the demons are described as issuing out at night to wreak mayhem, but forced back into the underworld by the divine glory (khvarenah) at sunrise.

#3 Qarin

The Qarin's name means "constant companion," and that is what they do. According to Islamic literature, each of us has a Qarin and they grow and learn as we do. One quote from Muhammad reads:“There is none of you who does not have a companion (qareen) appointed for him from among the jinn.” They said, “Even you?” He said, “Even me, but Allaah helped me against him fa aslama [or fa aslamu], so he only tells me to do that which is good.” The Qarin are individuals but are confined to our experiences, which can define a Qarin's character.

#2 Houri

The Houri are the divine and beautiful beings that are given to humans when the enter Jannah, or paradise. They are said to be God's idea of beauty, because they never age or die, they are forever loyal, and they have no bodily excretions. The Houri rarely become pregnant, they are transparent to the bone, and hairless everywhere but their eyebrows and head. They are know for their beautiful eyes.
Thus shall it be. And We shall pairA them with companions pure, most beautiful of eye.
—Quran, sura 44 (Ad-Dukhan), ayah 54[29][There the blest will live with their] companions pure and modest, in pavilions [splendid]
—Quran, sura 55, (Ar-Rahman), ayah 72[30]reclining on couches [of happiness] ranged in rows!" And [in that paradise] We shall mate them with companions pure, most beautiful of eye
—Quran, sura 52 (At-Tur), ayah 20[31]nd [with them will be their] spouses, raised high: for, behold, We shall have brought them into being in a life renewed, having resurrected them as virgins
—Quran, sura 56 (Al-Waqiah), ayat 34-36[32]And among His wonders is this: He creates for you mates out of your own kindC so that you might incline towards them, and He engenders love and tenderness between you: in this, behold, there are messages indeed for people who think! ... And He it is who creates [all life] in the first instance, and then brings it forth anew: and most easy is this for Him, since His is the essence of all that is most sublime in the heavens and on earth, and He alone is almighty, truly wise.
—Quran, sura 30 (Ar-Rum), ayat 21...27[33]There are also verses regarding both genders explicitly:
Allah has promised the believers, both men and women,D gardens through which running waters flow, therein to abide, and goodly dwellings in gardens of perpetual bliss: but Allah's goodly acceptance is the greatest [bliss of all] -for this, this is the triumph supreme!
—Quran, sura 9 (At-Taubah), ayah 72[34]As for anyone - be it man or womanE - who does righteous deeds, and is a believer withal - him shall We most certainly cause to live a good life, and most certainly shall We grant unto such as these their reward in accordance with the best that they ever did.
—Quran, sura 16 (An-Nahl), ayah 97[35]A verse regarding other companionship:
And, O our Sustainer, bring them into the gardens of perpetual bliss which Thou hast promised them, together with the righteous from among their forebears, and their spouses, and their offspring - for, verily, Thou alone art almighty, truly wise
—Quran, sura 40 (Ghafir), ayah 8[36] Al-Hasan Al-Basri says that an old woman came to the messenger of Allah and made a request, O’ Messenger of Allah make Dua that Allah grants me entrance into Jannah. The messenger of Allah replied, O’ Mother, an old woman cannot enter Jannah. That woman started crying and began to leave. The messenger of Allah said, Say to the woman that one will not enter in a state of old age, but Allah will make all the women of Jannah young virgins. Allah Ta’aala says, Lo! We have created them a (new) creation and made them virgins, lovers, equal in age.—Al-Tirmidhi, Jami` at-Tirmidhi (Surah Waaqi’ah,Muhammad was heard say: "The smallest reward for the people of Heaven is an abode where there are eighty thousand servants and seventy two wives, over which stands a dome decorated with pearlsaquamarine and ruby, as wide as the distance from [Damascus] to San'a.
—Al-Tirmidhi, The Features of Heaven as described by the Messenger of AllahA houri is a most beautiful young woman with a transparent body. The marrow of her bones is visible like the interior lines of pearls and rubies. She looks like red wine in a white glass. She is of white color, and free from the routine physical disabilities of an ordinary woman such as menstruation, menopause, urinal and offal discharge, child bearing and the related pollution. A houri is a girl of tender age, having large breasts which are round (pointed), and not inclined to dangle. Houris dwell in palaces of splendid surroundings.
—Al-Tirmidhi, Jami` at-Tirmidhi[43]

#1 Ifrit

The Ifrit are in a class of infernal jinn, those noted for their strength and cunning, and appear as giant winged creatures of smokeless fire. They can be either male or female, and live underground or frequent ruins or abandoned places. They usually marry their own kind but have been know to marry humans. Humans can also kill or capture an Ifrit, if they are particularly clever. One tale of such human was the Sorcerer Solomon, who tricked the Ifrit for many decades. An Ifrit can change forms to various animals, people, or inanimate objects, or can even become a sandstorm.

"An ifrit (strong one) from the jinn said: "I will bring it to you before you rise from your place. And verily, I am indeed strong, and trustworthy for such work." One with whom was knowledge of the Scripture said: "I will bring it to you within the twinkling of an eye!" Then when Solomon saw it placed before him, he said: "This is by the Grace of my Lord - to test me whether I am grateful or ungrateful! And whoever is grateful, truly, his gratitude is for (the good of) his ownself; and whoever is ungrateful, (he is ungrateful only for the loss of his ownself). Certainly my Lord is Rich (Free of all needs), Bountiful."                                                                                                     - Qur'anSura An-Naml (27:39-40)

3 Ways Archimedes Perfected the Art of Killing Romans

Posted by explogame On Friday, 1 July 2016 0 comments

Archimedes is generally considered one of the greatest mathematicians and inventors of all time. The exclamation, "Eureka!" was coined by Archimedes, commonly used after a personal breakthrough and is now the state motto of California. There is a crater on the moon named after Archimedes, there is an asteroid named after him also, his likeness appears on several postage stamps, and on the Fields Metal, an award for outstanding achievements in mathematics. He used the method of exhaustion to calculate the area under the arc of parabola with the summation of an infinite series, and gave a remarkably accurate approximation of pi. He also defined the spiral that still bears his name, invented a formula to measure the volumes of irregularly shaped solids with water displacement, and an ingenious system for expressing large numbers like the number of grains of sand that can fit into the universe.

He proved that the volume of a surface area of the sphere are two thirds that of the cylinder, including it's bases, and discovered the Archimedes Principle, which states that a body (dead Roman body) immersed in a fluid experiences a buoyant force equal and opposite of the weight of fluid it(the dead Roman body) displaces, he observed this by studying dead bodies (dead Roman bodies) floating in the ocean. But lets skip the rest of the boring history lesson and get right down to the juicy bits, this article is about how Archimedes used the genius he possessed to invent killing machines that equal some of the technologies we use today and how he used these machines to kill scores of unsuspecting Romans. Archimedes was born Syracuse, a bustling, self- governing seaport located in Magna Graecia, along the coast of Southern Italy. Plutarch wrote (not the Plutarch from The Hunger Games) that Archimedes was the son of an astronomer and was related, by birth, to  King Hiero II of Syracuse. So when the considerable eye and military force of the Romans turned toward Syracuse's coast, King Hiero put his secret weapon, Archimedes, to good use. Here are 4 ways Archimedes perfected the art of killing Romans.

3. The Claw

This weapon was invented by Archimedes to defend the seaward portions of the Syracuse city wall against attacks from the Roman's huge navy fleet. The Romans were almost unbeatable when they set their warships upon a nation, and they did eventually defeat Syracuse, but not without getting a run for their money. The claw or "Iron Hand," was a like a crane that extended over the city wall with a grappling hook fitted at it's business end, and when attached to attacking ships by propelling it at them until it sinks it's hooks in, it would pull the ship partially out of the water, and then suddenly drop it back in causing it to capsize. On the Roman's end it must have been a spectacular and terrifying sight to see, the infamous Roman navy vessel brought to it's knees and lifted almost completely out of the water and flung back in like it weighed no more than a sack of potatoes. The Romans probably saw this as an act of the gods, forever placing Archimedes and his sovereign, King Hiero the II, in the history books.

2. Heat Ray

The Heat Ray of Archimedes used highly polished bronze or copper shields that acted as mirrors to focus the sun's power on incoming enemy ships to set them on fire. He would have needed hundreds of copper shields, about three hundred to focus enough solar power, but with the king's ear who's to say he couldn't procure them. Many have tried this experiment and failed, like Mythbusters who tried and failed not once, but several times. Others have show that if the experiment is executed correctly, (like you will see at the bottom of #3) there is more than enough solar power focused to raise temperatures to 570 degrees Fahrenheit, the minimum temperature needed to set wood on fire. The trick is in the curvature of the reflective surface, like the first video at the top of this article shows, with the right curvature the death ray becomes a very powerful and dangerous weapon. The Solar II power plant near Barstow in California uses this same technology with 2,000 curved mirrors to reflect the heat of the sun back at it's solar receiver to make 10 megawatts of power a day. The electricity generated from all three of it's plants is enough to power more than 140,000 homes in California during peak hours. "Eureka!"

1. Steam Cannon

A steam cannon is a cannon that uses only heat and water, or steam, to launch a projectile. Archimedes invented it first during the Siege of Syracuse, and purportedly killed many Romans with his steam powered death machine. The copper device would be placed in a furnace, one end of the tube would be capped and the other loaded with a projectile. The Romans realizing how difficult a siege would be against Archimedes's inventions, brought their own assault weapons including the sambuca, a floating siege tower with grappling hooks, as well a ship mounted scaling ladders the were lowered with pulleys onto the city walls. When Archimedes countered each one of these with his own invention, the siege dwindled down to a stalemate. Until the Roman General, Marcus Claudius Marcellus, learned of an annual festival in Syracuse, for their goddess Artemis, and sent a party of Roman soldier to kill the 78 year old Archimedes. After Archimedes's assassination, Syracuse quickly fell to the Romans but Archimedes's prowess lived on. Leonardo da Vinci modeled his steam cannon after Archimedes's cannon, which he named the Architonnerre after Archimedes, in the 1500's. The Holman Projector was a World War II steam cannon with limited success, shaming more modern scientists. Now, we use this same steam powered technology to launch fighter jets off our Navy's air craft carriers, but even some of today's scientists have limited success in recreating this technology. The first video on this list shows the steam cannon's awesome power when used correctly.

5 Demons of Hell

5 Demons of Hell

Hell is usually known as a place of torment and domination, basically its a pace of punishment. In most religions and traditions there is a place like heaven, where a soul can enjoy the afterlife, and a hell, where you suffer for all eternity. In whatever form and name hell comes in, traditions typically locate it in another dimension or under the Earth's surface, and often include entrances to hell from the dimensions of the living. Some are ruled by a death god such as Nergal, Hades, Hel, Enma or the Devil with a whole pantheon of fiends that do their bidding. Mostly, hell is portrayed with demons who torment the lost souls that dwell within it's boundaries, as their perpetual punishment for the injustices they committed on Earth. Often, old world gods were reincarnated as angels of hell from pagan religions like the fallen angel, Moloch, known widely as Baal, a false idol in the old testament.

Here is a list of 5 Demons of Hell:

#5 Moloch

Moloch comes from a Semitic root word "Malech" or king, and "Bosheth" meaning shame. Malech is the name of an ancient Canaanite god, and Milchom an ancient Ammonite god, who are more or less two incarnations of the same ancient god. Moloch worship was practiced by the Canaanites (Jews), Phoenicians, and the Levant, and as with the old world practices of the Phoenicians and Canaanites. Moloch had associations with a particular kind of propitiatory child sacrifice. Parents often ritually slaughtered children, describing it as "to pass through the fire," the name given to the rite carried out after the victims had been put to death. The oblation by fire, a practice that began in Baal worship, was likely the link in the association between Baal and Moloch. At Palmyra, the Malach-bel were sun-gods which suggests to many that Moloch was originally a fire god, or a sun god. With these credentials and already as an enemy of "The Lord" he was a perfect candidate in mythology to rule as a demon in hell. Being so terrifying that even the vicious god of the Old Testament was flabbergasted with his follower's ritual practices.

And thou shalt not let any of thy seed pass through the fire to Molech, neither shalt thou profane the name of thy God: I am the LORD.   -Leviticus 18:21
"There was in their city a bronze image of Cronus (Moloch) extending its hands, palms up and sloping toward the ground, so that each of the children when placed thereon rolled down and fell into a sort of gaping pit filled with fire.   -Diodorus Siculus
From Milton's Paradise Lost:"First MOLOCH, horrid King besmear'd with bloodOf human sacrifice, and parents tears,Though, for the noyse of Drums and Timbrels loud,Their children's cries unheard that passed through fireTo his grim Idol. Him the AMMONITEWorshipt in RABBA and her watry Plain,In ARGOB and in BASAN, to the streamOf utmost ARNON. Nor content with suchAudacious neighbourhood, the wisest heartOf SOLOMON he led by fraud to buildHis Temple right against the Temple of GodOn that opprobrious Hill, and made his GroveThe pleasant Vally of HINNOM, TOPHET thenceAnd black GEHENNA call'd, the Type of Hell."

#4 Mammon

In the New Testament, Mammon is the material incarnation of wealth and greed, most often portrayed as a deity and one of the Seven Princes of Hell. As greed and excessive materialism personified, he lures unsuspecting mortals with the fruits and flavors of hell and fuels their greedy fires until the commit immoral deeds for personal gain, delightedly hurting many innocents in the process. Every time we refuse that dollar to starving children in Africa, Mammon laughs in wicked delight.

"Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon." – Matthew 6:19–21,24

#3 Beezlebub

According to biblical sources, Beezlebub, is another name for the Devil, the supreme ruler of hell, and in Christian demonology he is one of the seven princes of hell. Beezlebub, which means, "lord of the flies" or "lord of the heavenly dwelling," was originally the name of a Philistine god, Baal or Baal muian ("Baal of the flies"). The name swap reflected a tradition of negative associations with the name Baal. Yet, in other forms Baal has lived on. In the Testament of Solomon, Beezlebul (not Beezlebub) appears as prince of the demons and says that he was formerly a leading heavenly angel who was associated with Venus, the evening star. Here, Beezlebul is most definitely an incarnation of Lucifer. He claims to have caused destruction to innocents by tyrants, to encourage demon worship, to excite priests to lust, to cause jealousies and murder, and to bring on war. Some believe Beezlebub is a separate entity from the devil and may have even led a successful revolt in hell. It is thought that he is now the chief lieutenant of Lucifer, the emperor of hell, and that under him Beezlebub presides over, "The Order of the Fly."

Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them, Every kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and every city or household divided against itself will not stand. If Satan drives out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then can his kingdom stand? And if I drive out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your people drive them out? So then, they will be your judges. But if I drive out demons by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.  —Matthew 12:25-28

#2 Belial

As the demon and personification of lust, power, and materialism, Belial is very popular with Satanists. In the Christian religion, he is seen as one of many faces of Satan and is the poster boy of licentiousness. In most current demonologies he was created immediately after Lucifer and appears to all as a gorgeous angel in fiery chariot, and he uses his alluring visage to lure, lie, trick, and manipulate unsuspecting mortals.
But for corruption thou hast made Belial, an angel of hostility. All his dominions are in darkness, and his purpose is to bring about wickedness and guilt. All the spirits that are associated with him are but angels of destruction. -The Dead Sea Scrolls

"I shall not comfort the oppressed until their path is perfect. I shall not retain Belial within my heart." - Rules of the Community
One of the synonyms for Satan or one of the minor devils; principally, the Antichrist: as used in the Old Testament, a modifying genitive signifying worthlessness or recklessness, e.g., "sons of Belial" as in the story of the Benjamite war (Judg.19). Hence, the underworld (Sheol) and the personification of wickedness. Belial may perhaps be a modification of the Babylonian Belili, a deity connected with the underworld in the Ishtar-Tammuz story.
"Folklore, Mythology and Legend" by Funk & Wa Wagnalls (1984)

Belial means "without a master", and symbolizes true independence, self-sufficiency, and personal accomplishment. Belial represents the earth element.
"The Satanic Bible"
Anton LaVey (1969)

#1 Leviathan

Often associated with Poseidon, Leviathan is a demon of the deep and almost immortal. He only trembles when faced with God and fears a small worm called "kilbit," which clings to the gills of large fish and kills them. Leviathan is thought to be one of the seven princes of hell, and along with Lucifer and Beezlebub, he was one the first three angels to fall from heaven. In the hierarchy of Seraphim, Cherubim, and Thrones, Leviathan was also a prince of Seraphim, who tempts people to give in to heresy, and is opposed by St. Peter. His name is often invoked for family curses, so one must invoke the name of St. Peter for protection and relief. His month is February, when Leviathan is said to have more strength to accomplish his evil tasks.

1 Can you pull in the leviathan with a fishhook or tie down his tongue with a rope?
2 Can you put a cord through his nose or pierce his jaw with a hook?
3 Will he keep begging you for mercy? Will he speak to you with gentle words?
4 Will he make an agreement with you for you to take him as your slave for life?
5 Can you make a pet of him like a bird or put him on a leash for your girls?
6 Will traders barter for him? Will they divide him up among the merchants?
7 Can you fill his hide with harpoons or his head with fishing spears?
8 If you lay a hand on him, you will remember the struggle and never do it again!
9 Any hope of subduing him is false; the mere sight of him is overpowering.
10 No-one is fierce enough to rouse him. Who then is able to stand against me?
11 Who has a claim against me that I must pay? Everything under heaven belongs to me.
12 I will not fail to speak of his limbs, his strength and his graceful form.
13 Who can strip off his outer coat? Who would approach him with a bridle?
14 Who dares open the doors of his mouth, ringed about with his fearsome teeth?
15 His back has rows of shields tightly sealed together;
16 Each is so close to the next that no air can pass between.
17 They are joined fast to one another; they cling together and cannot be parted.
18 His snorting throws out flashes of light; his eyes are like the rays of dawn.
19 Firebrands stream from his mouth; sparks of fire shoot out.
20 Smoke pours from his nostrils as from a boiling pot over a fire of reeds.
21 His breath sets coals ablaze, and flames dart from his mouth.
22 Strength resides in his neck; dismay goes before him.
23 The folds of his flesh are tightly joined; they are firm and immovable.
24 His chest is hard as rock, hard as a lower millstone.
25 When he rises up, the mighty are terrified; they retreat before his thrashing.
26 The sword that reaches him has no effect, nor does the spear or the dart or the javelin.
27 Iron he treats like straw and bronze like rotten wood.
28 Arrows do not make him flee, sling stones are like chaff to him.
29 A club seems to him but a piece of straw, he laughs at the rattling of the lance.
30 His undersides are jagged potsherds, leaving a trail in the mud like a threshing-sledge.
31 He makes the depths churn like a boiling cauldron and stirs up the sea like a pot of ointment.
32 Behind him he leaves a glistening wake; one would think the deep had white hair.
33 Nothing on earth is his equal—a creature without fear.
34 He looks down on all that are haughty; he is king over all that are proud.
-Job 41:1-34
"God created the great sea monsters—taninim.[3] According to legend this refers to the Leviathan and its mate. God created a male and female Leviathan, then killed the female and salted it for the righteous, for if the Leviathans were to procreate the world could not stand before them."
-Genesis 1:21
When the Leviathan is hungry, reports Rabbi Dimi in the name of Rabbi Johanan, he sends forth from his mouth a heat so great as to make all the waters of the deep boil, and if he would put his head into Paradise no living creature could endure the odor of him (ib.). His abode is the Mediterranean Sea; and the waters of the Jordan fall into his mouth (Bek. 55b; B. B. l.c.).
The body of the Leviathan, especially his eyes, possesses great illuminating power. This was the opinion of Rabbi Eliezer, who, in the course of a voyage in company with Rabbi Joshua, explained to the latter, when frightened by the sudden appearance of a brilliant light, that it probably proceeded from the eyes of the Leviathan. He referred his companion to the words of Job xli. 18: "By his neesings a light doth shine, and his eyes are like the eyelids of the morning" (B. B. l.c.). However, in spite of his supernatural strength, the leviathan is afraid of a small worm called "kilbit", which clings to the gills of large fish and kills them (Shab. 77b)
"Such strength dwells in his neck that panic moves before him.  The folds of his flesh close in on each other firmly and are immovably cast upon him.  His heart is as hard as a rock, solid as a nether millstone.  When he raises himself up the mighty are afraid and are beside themselves with panic.
"To hit him with a sword is useless; so is a spear, a dart or javelin.  To him iron is as straw and copper as rotten wood.  Arrows do not rout him, sling stones he treats as stubble.  Clubs are counted by him as reeds and he mocks the rattle of javelins.  His nether parts are like potsherds, they leave threshing sledge grooves in the mire.
"He makes the deep to boil like a pot, the sea like a vessel of ointment.  Behind him he leaves a foaming wake and one wonders if the sea might be growing frost.  On earth there is not his equal.  A creature devoid of fear, he looks down on all that is highest.  He is a king over all the sons of pride" (Job 41).

AROUND THE WORLD IN 20 PHOTOS: Astounding Photos of what the World Eats!

About the project:

These images are from the book 'Hungry Planet: What the World Eats' by Peter Menzel and Faith D'Aluision. It's an inspired idea, to better understand the human diet, explore what culturally diverse families eat for a week. Their portraits feature pictures of each family with a week's worth of food purchases. We soon learn that diet is determined by largely uncontrollable forces like poverty, conflict and globalization, which can bring change with startling speed. Thus cultures can move, sometimes in a single jump, from traditional diets to the vexed plenty of global-food production. People have more to eat and, too often, eat more of nutritionally questionable food. And their health suffers.
