#1 Giant Pitcher Plant
The pitcher plant, or Nepenthes attenboroughii, was only just discovered in 1997 and has already appeared on the World's 100 Most Threatened Species list, in 2012. Nepenthes attenboroughii is assessed as Critically Endangered by the World Conservation Union (IUCN) on account of its restricted distribution and the threat posed by plant poachers. Likely due to demand after it made in the news in several countries. It became popular andwas sold as an exotic rat catcher. Although at that time, no rats had yet to be observed trapped in their pitchers, large bugs and flying insects are it's usual prey.
However, in 2012 a dead shrew was found in a pitcher by a group of naturalists, and provided the opportunity to study and document the rate of digestion. It was observed that the shrew had progressed from an intact state to just skeletal remains within weeks.
The top half of the pitcher contains water and often provides homes to mosquito larvae, while the bottom half is composed of it's digestive fluids. The two fluids don't mix making it a safe home for the mosquito larvae and other infauna species.
#2 Rafflesia Plant
Rafflesia, a genus of parasitic flowering plants, was discovered in the early 1800s. The flower can grow up to 39 inches, and weigh up to 22 pounds. Rafflesia has the largest single flower of any flowering plant. The flower creates an odor similar to rotting meat, which attracts flies to transport pollen between male and female plants.
#3 Titan Arum
Amorphophallus titanum, otherwise known as the titan arum, is a flowering plant with the largest unbranched inflorescence in the world. An inforescence is a group or cluster of flowers as opposed to one single flower. The titan arum's inflorescence is not as large as that of the talipot palm, Corypha umbraculifera, but the inflorescence of the talipot palm is branched rather than unbranched.
Due to its rotting flesh smell, the titan arum is characterized as a carrion flower. the Titan Arum generally requires 7–10 years of vegetative growth before blooming for the first time. After its initial blooming, there can be considerable variation in blooming frequency. Some plants may not bloom again for another 7–10 years while others may bloom every two to three years.
#4 Giant Water Lily
Victoria amazonica is a species of flowering plant, the largest of the Nymphaeaceae family of water lilies. The species has leaves up to 10 feet in diameter, that float on the water's surface on a submerged stalk that can measure up to 30 feet in length. It is native to the shallow waters of the Amazon River basin, such as oxbow lakes and bayous.
#5 Giant Granadilla
The Giant Granadilla, or Passiflora quadrangularis, produces the largest fruit any species within the genus Passiflora. It's roots contain narcotic properties, and it is used to make a tea that treats high blood pressure and diabetes.
#6 Giant Saguaro
The saguaro is an arborescent (tree-like) cactus species, which can grow to be over 70 ft tall. It is native to the Sonoran Desert in Arizona, Sonora, and the Whipple Mountains and Imperial County areas of California. The saguaro blossom is the State Wildflower of Arizona.
