5 Killer Priests

5 Killer Priests

#5 Reverand Ryan Erickson

The double murder that occurred the quiet northern Wisconsin town of Hudson still seems inexplicable: a funeral home director and an employee surprised and killed in the middle of a workday by a gunman who disappeared without taking money or valuables. Hudson's shock deepened further when a judge ruled that the murders were committed by a local Roman Catholic priest who served the town and spoke at the funeral of one of the dead men.

In an unbelievable courtroom proceeding, a St. Croix County judge found that 31-year-old Father Ryan Erickson murdered both men to cover his tracks after one of them learned that Erickson had been sexually assaulting a teenage boy. In December 2004, shortly after being questioned by police, Erickson hanged himself outside his rectory. In a suicide note he denied killing anyone, but testimony from 15 witnesses and evidence presented by prosecutor Eric Johnson painted a dark image of the priest and the desperate path he had chosen.

Among the evidence was testimony from a young boy who alleged that Father Ryan served him alcohol and sexually assaulted him repeatedly during 2000 and 2001; an eyewitness who described a car similar to Erickson's parked outside the funeral home at the time of the killings; testimony from detectives who said Erickson knew undisclosed crime scene details such as how many bullets were fired (three) and where the victims were hit (in the head); Erickson's own fondness for guns (he owned 16); and a statement by a deacon from another church who said Erickson had confessed.

Evidence also showed that Erickson had been the target of allegations of sexual misconduct before arriving in Hudson, but the allegations were never proven and he was never brought to charges by the church, nor were the people of Hudson aware of the young priest's record. Because the defendant in this case was deceased,  the judge ruled that if Erickson were alive there would be probable cause to charge him with sexual assault and murder. Erickson's attorney and parents, who maintain that he is not guilty, refused to attend the hearing. St. Croix D.A. Eric Johnson explained that even though the evidence was not cross-examined and was not heard by a jury, the judge's ruling "can be construed as a finding of guilt."

#4 Father Hans Schmidt

Hans Schmidt was a Roman Catholic priest convicted of murder, in 1916,  and the only priest to be sentenced to death in the United States. While serving in New York, Schmidt met Anna Aumüller, the attractive housekeeper for the rectory who had recently emigrated from Austria. Despite his subsequent transfer to a church in a distant area of the city, Schmidt and Anna continued a secret sexual relationship. It was later revealed that they were married in a secret ceremony of dubious legality, which Schmidt performed himself. However, after discovering that Anna was pregnant, Schmidt slashed her throat on the night of September 2, 1913, dismembered the body, and threw the pieces into the East River.

Once the body was discovered, a police investigation led to Schmidt and he was arrested and charged with the murder. A media circus spectacle ensued, comparable to those caused by the Scott Peterson and Mark Hacking cases of a later era, as the New York papers competed against each other with an ever greater degree of sensationalism regarding the case. After feigning insanity during his first trial, which ended with a hung jury, Schmidt was eventually convicted of first degree murder and sentenced to death in the electric chair. On February 18, 1916, Schmidt was executed at Sing Sing Prison; he remains the only priest ever executed for murder in the United States.

#3 Father John Felt

When John Feit was a 27-year-old Roman Catholic priest, he was questioned in Garza's killing.

Searchers had found the lifeless body of former Miss South Texas, Irene Garza, face down in a canal in her hometown of McAllen. She'd disappeared on the day before Easter after going to Sacred Heart Catholic Church for confession. An autopsy determined Garza had been raped while in a coma, and then had died from suffocation. Near Garza's body investigators found items that belonged to the church, including a candelabra. One item, a metallic Kodak slide photo viewer, belonged to a 27-year-old priest who was assigned to the church: the Rev. John Feit. Questioned by police, Feit failed lie detector tests. What was also suspicious was that just 24 days before the killing, Feit had been arrested for attacking another young woman at a church in a town about 10 miles from McAllen. Feit pleaded no contest to misdemeanor aggravated assault. A judge found him guilty and fined him $500 with no prison time. All this took place in 1960.

Now, more than half a century later, Feit lives in a pleasant neighborhood in Phoenix, after leaving the priesthood in the late '60s. In a sworn statement to authorities and during an interview with CNN, Feit denied he killed Garza. Feit told police Garza left the rectory after he heard her confession and the last time he saw her, she was standing outside the church.

#2 Rev. John M. Fiala

A Catholic Priest, The Rev. John M. Fiala, was arrested and taken to Dallas County, Texas, charged with one count of criminal solicitation to commit capital murder. He was also is charged with two counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child. Fiala, 52, of Dallas, was out on bond on other sexual assault charges involving the youth, now 18, when he allegedly attempted to negotiate the boy's murder, said Tom Rhodes, the teen's attorney. He was arrested after he offered an undercover agent with the Texas Department of Public Safety $5,000 to kill the teen, according to department spokeswoman Lisa Block. "This guy," Edwards County Sheriff Don Letsinger said, "is an evil man." The youth met Fiala in 2007, according to Rhodes. The attorney said the priest started "grooming him," buying him gifts including a computer and a car. In early 2008, when the boy was 16, under the guise of providing private catechism lessons, Fiala "gained access to him and began to sexually abuse him once or twice a month, including on church grounds," Rhodes said. At the time, Fiala was administrator of Sacred Heart of Mary.

The alleged abuse occurred in two counties, and included the youth's rape at gunpoint, the attorney said. Fiala allegedly threatened to kill the youth if he told anyone -- threats he repeated in daily text messages, Rhodes said, and Fiala also threatened to kill himself, telling the teen they would "go to heaven together." The teen, after struggling with the abuse, told a school counselor, who notified authorities, Rhodes said. He filed suit in April against Fiala, as well as the archdioceses of San Antonio, Texas, and Omaha, Nebraska -- where Fiala was before Texas -- and Fiala's religious order, the Society of Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity, the attorney said.

The suit claims that all three covered up Fiala's record of abuse. All three have denied doing so, according to the San Antonio, Texas, Express-News. When former San Antonio Archbishop Jose Gomez and the religious order learned of the police investigation into Fiala's relationship with the teen, he was removed from active ministry in October 2008, the newspaper reported. In September, an Edwards County grand jury indicted Fiala on three counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child and one count of aggravated sexual assault by threat, according to the Express-News. Fiala was arrested in Kansas by a fugitive task force and was extradited to Texas. A grand jury in Howard County handed up an indictment on the two aggravated sexual assault charges, the Express-News said. Meanwhile, " we got an anonymous phone call from someone saying, 'Look, I'm living in a building with this guy, and he's talking about killing this young man,' " Rhodes said. "Our response was, 'You need to call police.' " Letsinger said he got a call November 11 from the neighbor. The man at first just told authorities they should "be looking at this guy," the sheriff said, but later said Fiala had offered him $5,000 to kill the teenager.

The Department of Public Safety and its Texas Ranger Division got involved, sending the undercover agent to speak with Fiala, Rhodes said. The conversation was caught on video and audiotape. Rhodes said his client was relieved to hear of Fiala's arrest. He was attending college but h d to withdraw and be spirited away somewhere safe because of the threats, he said. "He's still very afraid, but he is hoping that this time Fiala will stay behind bars," Rhodes said. The Omaha diocese had argued it should be sued in Nebraska rather than Texas. The judge rejected that argument, Rhodes said. "I think he's cooked his goose now," Letsinger said of Fiala. "We know that pedophiles sometimes threaten their  victims to keep them quiet. But this is kind of an older victim, and you wonder sometimes why they wouldn't come forward. ... I can see now the evil in this guy is pretty bad."

#1 Rev. Gerald Robinson

On April 5, 1980, Sister Margaret Ann Pahl, 71, was found dead on the floor of the chapel room in Toledo's Mercy Hospital.  The elderly nun had been strangled and stabbed in the neck and torso at least 30 times.  Candles surrounded her body and her arms were folded across her chest.  Investigators deemed the murder a "ritual" killing because the way her body was posed — lying face up with an altar cloth draped over her torso.  From the start, investigators focused on the hospital's chaplain, Father Gerald Robinson. He was questioned several times and his living quarters in the church were searched, which resulted in finding a letter opener police believed was used in the slaying. Prosecutor Bates found the similarities between Jane Doe's alleged ritualistic abuses and the "ritual" killing of Sister Margaret intriguing and decided to take another look at the 25-year-old murder case.

Bates hired several forensic experts to conduct a battery of tests on the original evidence, including the letter opener, which had been in police storage since it was taken from Robinson's room in the hospital. Other experts studied blood evidence taken from the crime scene and reviewed taped interviews they saved from a 1980 interrogation of Robinson. On April 23, 2004, The Toledo Blade reported Gerald Robinson was arrested on an aggravated murder charge in the slaying of Sister Margaret Ann Pahl.  Prosecutors said there was enough evidence after all to charge Robinson with the murder, stating that after investigators analyzed blood patterns they concluded that the murder weapon, the letter opener, was in his "control."

The case against Robinson went to trial on April 24, 2006. Robinson was found guilty on all counts on May 11, 2006. This is the second conviction for homicide of a Catholic priest in the U.S.; Hans Schmidt, executed in 1916, was the first. Robinson's attorney said that the decision would shortly be appealed to the Ohio Supreme Court, and that once state appeals were exhausted, the case could move to U.S. District Court. On July 4, 2014, Robinson died in prison, after a judge refused a request for him to be released to Toledo to die.

5 Portals to Hell

5 Portals to Hell

The belief in the supernatural was rampant in ancient societies and in the medieval ages and it is still typical in the modern era. Mystery begets mystification, and before science became a religion, in and of itself, we often equated misunderstood science with magic, explaining any unfamiliar forces as a commandment of the gods, or god as the case may be. And where there is a god there must be a devil, and where there is a heaven, a hell of eternal damnation lies in wait. The sky is beautiful and the underground cold, dark, and deep or a fiery pit of  burning vengeance, so its no wonder we associate death and devils with the under regions. There are many names associated with hell, like the netherworld, the inferno, Hades, Seoul, or the abyss and there are many entrances if you know where to look. Here are 5 Portals to Hell.

5 Lacus Curtius

In the center of the Roman Forum, lies a great chasm that is somewhat still paved over with ancient stone. The widening chasm was said to be an entrance to Hades, where a young boy named Marcus Curtius plunged himself into the pit, regaled in full battle armor and riding his trusty steed. The city was in danger of invasion and according to the oracle, the only way Rome could save itself was by sacrificing what it held most dear. Marcus figured Rome held himself dearest, or at the very least the nubile youth was what Rome treasured  the most, and volunteered for the job. Another story states that Marcus Curtius was named after Mettias Curtius, who was rumored to have fell into the chasm while fighting in battle against Romulus, Rome's fabled founder.

4 Karakum Desert - Door to Hell

.

Kerakum Desert is located in Central Asia in the Ahal Province of Turmenistan. It's door to hell is a natural gas, fire which has been burning continuously since 1971. The fire is fed by natural gas deposits under the ground and the smell of sulfur is almost overwhelming. The locals coined it's nickname "Door to Hell" after scientists started the fire in the 1970's to prevent methane gasses from leaking out and harming the local villagers. The scientists assumed incorrectly, that it would all burn off shortly, and instead it has burned for more than four centuries.

3 St Patrick's Purgatory

St. Patrick's Purgatory, a christian pilgrimage site on Station Island in Ireland, dates back to the fifth century and is reported to be the area where Jesus showed St Patrick a cave, that God declared an entrance to Purgatory. When St Patrick could not not convert the Irish he showed them the entrance to the cave, telling all that God showed him it's location. It seems awfully reminiscent of the caves the Romans used to astound and convert non-believers, like the next entry on this list. Again mistaking science for magic and miracles, the Irish were convinced of the cave's divinity and Catholicism is still the forefront religion in Ireland, St. Patrick being their patron saint.

2 Pluto's Gate to the Underworld

Pluto is the Greek equivalent of Hades, and Pluto's Gate was located in the ancient city of Hieropolis, in modern day Turkey. Like the last entry on this list, Pluto's Gate was used as a way to astound unbelievers into converting and reinforce a believer's fervor. Ancient priests would let animals into the cave where they promptly died at it's entrance. The priests, being more learned that the everyday Greek, knew that the poisonous gasses (carbon monoxide) seeping from pockets on the cave's floor, were heavier than air and therefore when an animal entered, it's body close to the ground, it would quickly die from the fumes (carbon monoxide poisoning). While the priests, being taller, walked in and out unharmed, it was seen as a miracle to the ignorant and proof that the gods protected their priests. One must wonder if St Patrick did learn this little trick in his studies and put it to good use on the uneducated masses.

1 Masaya Volcano

The Masaya Volcano is located in Volca Masaya National Park and is a popular tourist destination. The volcano was first described by the Spanish in 1524 and they believed it's spewing lava was pure melted gold. Since it was nicknamed the "Gates of Hell" it has erupted 19 times. The eruption that occurred in 4550 B.C. was one of the largest in the last 10,000 years, in more recent years it has become a mecca for satanic practices.

RELIGION MEANS PATHWAY TO TRUTH

Religion Means Pathway To Truth, Some Pathways Are A Long Winding Road

"The popular history of churchianity begins from 325 years after Christ, the 20th year of the reign of Constantine the Great, when the famous Council was convened at the City of Nicea.

"Those who have read the life of this august Roman Emperor will remember how remarkable was the character of this so called pious supporter of the church dogmas.

"He put to death his own son and his wife Fausta on groundless suspicion, cut off his brother-in-law Licinius and the unoffending son of Licinius and massacred everyone of his rivals.

"Nevertheless the Greek Church has canonized him, and adores the memory of St. Constantine.

"A bishop was kicked to death by another bishop in course of their arguments, and 137 corpses were left in a church to attest the convincing reasons by which the most ruffian side proved its orthodoxy.

"Such were the assemblies of saints who formed the pillars of the structure of Churchianity.

"We can easily imagine the nature of the guiding spirit of those councils, which established the creed of the church.

"From the beginning of the history of churches, down to the present day, freedom of thought and freedom of speech, that are the most essential characteristics of true religion, have been suppressed; and fanaticism, bigotry, curses, anathema, religious persecution, tortures of inquisition and diabolical crimes have been committed in the name of religion. Hatred, cruelty and fighting have reigned in the place of love, mercy, kindness, peace and goodwill..."

4 More Portals to Hell

#4 Seven Gates of Hell - Pennsylvania

The Seven Gates of Hell are located in Hellam, Pennsylvania and the legend of the gates stems from two different local tales, yet both legends agree that there are seven gates of hell located in Hellam Township (Hell-am) and that anyone who passes through all seven of the portals goes straight to hell. One legend claims that a mental institution was previously located in Hellam, and that it was built in a remote location to isolate it's patients. One night, a fire broke out and because of the asylum's inaccessible and isolated location, firefighters could not reach the hospital in time to save the patients. It was said many patients lost their lives to the fire that night, and those that escaped were beaten to death by a local search party. The gate at the rumored location of the mental institution plays a disputed role in the story, some say that the gates were put up by the local search party to trap the remaining inmates, while others believe in a tale completely unrelated to the asylum legend. It goes that an eccentric physician, who lived on the property, built several gates along a path and deep into the forest. Both accounts agree that one portal is visible during the day and the remaining six can only be seen at night. According to another local legend, no one has ever made it past the fifth gate, but if they managed to pass all seven, they would descend straight to hell. Another tale about the gates says that in the 1950's, a man killed his wife and children with a shot gun, and impaled their corpses upon the spikes of the first gate as a warning to all.

#3 Hekla Volcano - Iceland

"The Hekla, perpetually condemned to storms and snow, vomits stones under terrible noise."
-Abraham Orlelius *translated from latin

The Hekla Volcano is located in Iceland and reaches a height of almost 5,000 feet. It is one of Iceland's most active volcanoes, erupting twenty times since 874, and during the Middle Ages it was nicknamed "Gateway to Hell" by Europeans most likely due to it's tendency to erupt suddenly, often, and without warning. "Hekla never gives you much of a warning," said and Icelandic geophysicist, he pointed out that the longest warning they received was in 2000 when it rumbled for over an hour and a half before the expulsion of it's magma, which "was actually an unusually long warning. In 1970 we only got 25 minutes notice." In Iceland, Hekla is the word for hooded cloak, which most likely correlates to it's nearly constant cloud coverage over the summit. Ancient stories tell of the belief that the souls of the condemned journey through Hekla's crater on their way to hell, and others say that witches gather there every Easter to dance with the devil. Hekla has always claimed lots of attention and infamy and after the eruption of 1104, stories spread by gossiping monks said that Hekla was the the Gateway to Hell. In the year 1180, a monk named Herbert of Clairvaux wrote, "The renowned fiery cauldron of Sicily, which men call Hell's Chimney...that cauldron is affirmed  to be like a small furnace compared to this enormous inferno." There is a poem by the monk Benedict, from circa 1120, about the voyages of St. Brendan that refers to Hekla as the prison of Judas. In 1341, The Flatey Book Annal wrote that when Hekla erupted that year, people saw large and small birds flying into the fiery pit of molten lava and they interpreted it as damned souls entering the infernal regions. In actuality, it was most likely just bats finding shelter in a cave or fissure hidden close to the entrance of the volcano. Later, in the 16th century, Caspar Peucer, wrote that the Gates of Hell could be found in "the bottomless pit abyss of Hekla Fell."

#2 Fengdu County "Ghost City" - China

The Fengdu Ghost City is located in Fengdu County of Chongqing Municipality, People's Republic of China, and was built over 1,800 years ago, on the Ming Mountain, at the northern bank of the Yangtze River. Fengdu County is recognized by nearly all of the Chinese as the 'Ghost City' with almost 2,000 years of history under it's belt, the ghost city combines the cultures of Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism with a fascinating aura of mystery that surrounds ghost stories. Fengdu received it's name and reputation as the 'Ghost City' around AD 30, during The Eastern Han Dynasty. Two officials, Yin Changsheng and Wang Fangping, from the imperial court traveled to the Ming Mountains to implement their strict Taoist teachings of self control and self-abnegation. They believed that through self-cultivation, and by combining their family names, 'Yin' and 'Wang', to form 'Yinwang' which means "King of Hell" in Chinese, they could become immortals. Later, during the Tang Dynasty (AD 618-907) a breathtaking temple was constructed, on Ming Mountain, depicting life in hell. It includes imagery of demons, torture devices, and represents the belief in an afterlife that includes punishment for evil deeds committed in life, and rewards for living a virtuous life. In China, at this time, it was believed that the dead had to undergo three major tests to enter the netherworld, each respectively taken at the 'Nothing-To-Be-Done-Bridge,' 'The Ghost Touring Pass', and the Tianzi or 'Sun of Heaven Palace.' Only virtuous people can pass the first test, the 'Nothing-To-Be-Done-Bridge', the good pass over it safely, while the evil people fall in the pit and pools below. 'Ghost Touring Pass' is the second test before entry to the netherworld, and the location of where the dead present themselves to the Yama, the King of Hell, for reckoning. The third task occurs at the Tianzi Palace, where the ghosts must stand on a large stone, before the Palace Gates for three minutes. A righteous soul can easily complete the task, while the corrupt are sent straight to hell.

#1 Hell's Gate - Texas

In River Legacy Park, of Arlington, Texas there is whisper of an ancient trail called 'Hell's Gate', it was enclosed on both sides by dense swamps and low hanging trees, and the lengthy path was said to end at a large dirt mound, the very spot where captured Union spies were ruthlessly executed. It is said that if a person happens upon the exact spot of the assassinations, they may still see the gateposts that once marked the entrance to the trail and the proceeding passage. The prisoners knew the gate was the last turning point and their chances of escape died as soon as they entered the dense wood. Once through the portal, they were roughly forced down the path to the mound and ultimately the tree, where they were executed by hanging. It is believed that because of all the violent deaths that took place near the mound, an entrance to hell was born. The locals still claim that you can still hear the sobs and pleas of the men and women led to their death at 'Hell's Gate.'
