Now, what I have noticed is that in Malaysia you get the Chinese Malays, an often unhappy and unfriendly bunch, and the ordinary Malays, a generally very happy and very friendly bunch (apart from the few mad Islamists and the upper class snobs).
The Chinese Malays generally earn a lot more than the ordinary Malays, and generally do better at school; but would you not prefer to be happy and friendly?
Jed Rubenfeld and Amy Chua
In 'The Triple Package', Amy Chua (Chinese) and her husband, co-author Jed Rubenfeld (Jewish) examine why it is that eight groups seem to do so well in America.
These 8 groups are:
Jews, Indians, Chinese,
Iranians, Lebanese, Nigerians,
Cubans and Mormons
Tiger Mom: Some cultural groups are superior
Carnegie and Rockefeller. Chua and Rubenfeld forget that the Scots and Germans run much of America
According to Chua and Rubenfeld, the eight groups have three features in common:
(1) feelings of superiority,
(2) feelings of insecurity and
(3) 'impulse control', which means 'grit', which means not giving up easily.
Chua, a law professor at Yale, sounds like a typical Chinese parent.
Which means she sounds like the father of Frederick the Great, or the father of Adolf Hitler, or Barbara Bush the mother of George W Bush?
1. Think of 'Feelings of Superiority'.
Think of Jews killing Palestinians, Indian Hindus killing Indian Moslems, Iranian Shias killing Iraqi Sunnis, Lebanese Christians killing Lebanese Moslems, and so on.
2. Think of 'Insecurity'.
Think of severe emotional abuse in childhood.
Think of Frederick the Great, Adolf Hitler or George W Bush.
3. Think of 'Impulse Control' or 'grit' or 'determination'.
Number three may have some validity.
Headmasters of international schools may tell you that the white American kid is not doing well because his mother is always out partying and his father is planning his fifth divorce.
Whereas the Nigerian or Cuban kid comes from a happy family in which the Mum and dad keep an eye on manners and homework.
Italian immigrants.
Immigrants into the USA tend to be adventurous people with a lot of grit.
However, when it comes to the third generation of the immigrant family, things usually start to go wrong.
The kids of the third generation have become Americanised and they start to go astray.
